Die politische Kultur und der Zusammenhalt der Europäischen Union stehen auf dem Prüfstand der Geschichte. Selbstvergewisserung tut not: Was ist das geistige Fundament Europas?

'Philosophical Foundations of Freedom and Security in Europe': The political culture and the cohesion of the European Union are being challenged by history. Self-reflection is in order: What constitutes the intellectual groundwork of Europe? What are we obliged to defend? The volume offers an academic survey of our cultural identity. It develops the philosophical foundations of European freedom, whose recognition is essential to the strengthening of Europe's agency and resilience.

Johann Frank serves as a Major General in the Austrian Armed Forces and holds a Ph.D. in political science. Since June 2022 he has been working as Chief of Cabinet of the European Union Military Committee (EUMC). Until 2020 he functioned as head of the Institute for Peace Support and Conflict Management (IFK) at the Austrian Defence Academy. From 2014 to 2020 he served as director of defence policy at the Austrian Ministry of Defence. He was an advisory member at the National Security Council of the Republic of Austria, and a member of the Science Commission of the Austrian Ministry of Defence. Maj Gen Dr. Frank authored several scientific publications concerning European and Austrian security policy. Johannes Berchtold studied philosophy, political science, sociology and psychology in Innsbruck and Vienna. His dissertation focused on Hegel's critique and sublation of Kant's antinomy of freedom. From 2001 to 2020 he established and subsequently led the General Policy Department for Men's Affairs at the Austrian Ministry for Social Affairs. For several years he served as a lecturer at the Theresian Military Academy, teaching political theory.
