Digital images have been under suspicion of manipulation not just since the discussions about "deepfakes" and generative AI. While in the 1990s any digital image evidence seemed questionable, pragmatic answers have since prevailed. Whether and how digital images have actually been manipulated can in many cases be proven by using methods of image analysis and comparative data evaluation. Such practices of image forensics are the focus of this volume. A look at scientific as well as aesthetic procedures, at criminalistic methods, popular television series and artistic practices shows how suspicion towards images itself becomes productive: It not only produces new images, but also a new processual understanding of digital imagery. - Interdisciplinary overview of current debate on the truth content of digital images Including essays on professional, popular and artistic forms of image forensics

Roland Meyer is researcher in the fields of visual studies and media science. After working at the UdK Berlin, the Deutsches Hygiene-Museum Dresden and the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, he is currently researching virtual image archives and operative visuality in the SFB Virtuelle Lebenswelten at the Ruhr-Universität Bochum. Other focal points of his work are orientation in image spaces, the history of "visual communication", and the mediality of architecture. Publications include: Operative Portraits. Eine Bildgeschichte der Identifizierbarkeit von Lavater bis Facebook (2019); Gesichtserkennung (2021, series Digitale Bildkulturen).
