In June 1556, Melanchthon was summoned to the electoral court in Dresden. He takes the opportunity to pay a brief visit to his sick friend Johannes Mathesius in Bohemia. This detour is the only pleasant interruption in Melanchthon's everyday life; otherwise the professor often moans about the amount of work he has to cope with. The Diet of Regensburg gets off to a slow start; negotiations on a religious settlement are finally referred to a religious dialogue. The inner-Protestant disputes also continue. Melanchthon reacted with increasing disappointment to the persistent attacks by former students and friends. His bitterness was so great that he was unable to accept offers of peace from Nicolaus Gallus and Matthias Flacius Illyricus. He was also paralysed by his fear of talking to his critics. Nevertheless, settlement negotiations take place in January 1557, but they do not lead to a rapprochement between the Flacians and Melanchthon.
